Sony signs up all six major studios for HD movies on PlayStation Network

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/playstation/Sony_Signs_All_6_Major_Studios_for_HD_Movies_on_PlayStation’; Well, it looks like Sony has a little treat for PS3 users now that they’re able to turn their consoles back on — it’s just announced that it has signed up all six major studios to deliver HD movies on the PlayStation Network (the first company to do so, as Sony is happy to point out). That includes 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. and, of course, Sony Pictures Entertainment, which combined have an initial slate of 19 HD movies available to buy or rent — including “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Star Trek,” “District 9,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and “The Wizard of Oz,” to name a few. Those are only available in the US at the moment, but Sony says it plans to also roll them out to the U.K., France, Germany, and Spain “soon.”

Toshiba shrinks its universal USB docking station, calls it dynadock V

Remember when Toshiba launched its original dynadock back at CES 2007? Man, those were good times. But trust us — not nearly as good as right now. The outfit has just pushed out the dynadock V here in Vegas, which is out and about only a few months after the dynadock wireless U was spotted. Essentially, this Windows-friendly device “offers the universal compatibility of its predecessor, the dynadock U, in a smaller package.” It’s half the size and one-third thinner, with four USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet LAN connectivity, a Sleep-and-Charge USB port and a 3.5mm audio in / out socket. There’s also an integrated video card that supports a single DVI or VGA monitor with up to 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, though you won’t find this even the least bit interesting if you roll in the OS X / Linux crowds. Check it next month for $119.99.

YouTube and Universal’s VEVO Launch Party Packed and Star-Studded [PICS]

Sometime tonight, YouTube and Universal Music will be launching VEVO, a new YouTube-powered Web site dedicated to music videos. It’ll include content from some of the world’s largest record labels, including EMI, Universal and Sony Music. Oh, and did we mention that it will boast Last.fm integration?

To get VEVO off the ground in style, the music labels and Google are hosting an elaborate, expensive and extravagant launch party in New York City. An array of music stars are at the event, including Peter Wentz, Mariah Carey, Adam Lambert and (supposedly) Sheryl Crow. We’re also hearing that Google CEO Eric Schmidt is there, too. However, there is one person that we absolutely know is in attendance: Mashable Editor-in-Chief Adam Ostrow.

Adam was kind enough to take a snapshot of the event, and let us tell you: The place looks packed! YouTube and Universal are really pulling out all the stops to make VEVO’s launch a huge event.

We’re going to be monitoring the event and the launch of Vevo. In the meantime, let us know what you think of the VEVO plan and whether it’ll succeed in the comments.

Update: Bono just gave the keynote, and now Google CEO Eric Schmidt is speaking at the launch party.

Update 2: Eric Schmit stated that it was Bono who suggested the meeting that got VEVO going. In addition, 85 percent of music videos will be on VEVO. However, Youtube will remain as the destination for fan-made videos.

Now the company is back to its old tricks, ready to ship the first BD-59 discs with a 50GB Blu-ray / 9GB DVD configuration promising movie and all available special features in whichever format is desired. The expensive answer to a question no one was asking or the perfect way to add future proofing and extended compatibility to new movie purchases? We’ll know more once a price is announced for the Jason Bourne trilogy of movies — seeing their first individual Blu-ray releases — due on January 19.
