Target’s announced it is launching a scannable mobile coupon program — the first of its kind. The opt-in program will provides Target shoppers with a customized webpage on their mobile phones, with all offers scannable at checkout via a single barcode. Target’s no stranger to innovative marketing — its gift cards are well known for their cute, gadgety ways — and while this new program is essentially a text message driven sale (meaning it could quickly become a mere annoyance), anything that minimizes our interactions with fellow humans gets our stamp of approval, so the ability to scan your own barcode at the register? Penguin’s iPad-formatted books shown off, making waves
Penguin UK unveiled a peek at its upcoming plans for iPad formatted e-books, and we have to say, they’re really taking the whole interactive experience trip and running with it. If you take a look at the big P’s video presentation (which is embedded after the break), you’ll spy a lot of noisy interactive games targeted at children, the innards of the human body laid bare on the screen taking text books to the next, less boring level, plus a vampire novel with an “online community for vampire lovers” built right in. On the whole, it seems like Penguin’s vision for its books moving forward is less about… books, and more about… not books. Still, we seriously can’t wait to see the company’s iPad version of The Diary of Virginia Woolf. Full, semi-educational video is after the break.

Sony Vaio M surfaces… unofficially
Well, what do we have here? It’s the Sony Vaio M series netbook, as yet unannounced but sitting here getting detailed all the same. The 10.1-inch netbook, which looks, well, pretty much identical to the Sony Vaio W series, is apparently going to boast a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, a 250GB hard drive, plus 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, and a built-in webcam. There’s no pricing information or dates of availability for these bad boys yet, but there’s one more shot after the break to gander at — if you’re so inclined.

ComEd launches pilot solar energy program for 100 customers in Chicago
Chicago utility company ComEd announced earlier this week it will launch a pilot program for 100 of its customers to test out the power of the sun. The program will include the installation of solar panels into 100 homes, and further devices — such as smarter thermostats which do things like lower during the day when no one’s at home, and give out hourly pricing information — in fifty of those homes. The meters will also have the ability to reward customers who generate excess solar power that can be pumped back into the grid — because everybody loves being rewarded, right? ComEd will choose the pilot families by mail-in survey, and by factors such as their roofs, and the amount of shading trees there are in their yards.

Dell’s Latitude 13 laptop marketed for the business type (with a preinstalled Citrix client, simplified virtualization options and so on) is now available on the Dell site. With three customizing options — base, economy, and productivity packages — with a choice of Celeron M or Core 2 Solo CPUs, Linux, Vista, or Windows 7 OSs, up to 2GB of SD-RAM, and a 160GB hard drive.
